Weaning 2022

As it is every year, weaning is an exciting time for us as we finally see the ewes and lambs up close after a long period left to their own devices. This year didn’t disappoint with the lambs in good condition, already shedding their winter clothes. Due to time management reasons we decided to wean the Stud mob a week earlier this year which, combined with more multiples, dropped our average weaning weight (WW) down 4 kgs from last year to 27.6 kgs.

We weaned the ewes onto a heavily grazed paddock for 5 days to dry off and then slowly increased their feed. This technique has worked well so far as we haven’t had any show signs of black mastitis. They are now being used to retain the grass quality in our smaller paddocks.

Since we had the scales set up we decided to run the sale 2 tooth rams through to see how they are tracking. The mob of 36 averaged 86 kg. Over the next two months before the sale we will narrow this down to around 20 of the best animals. To stay up to date with the sale details click here.
